Roth watched his father pace. Ashlin’s robe was disheveled, his hair unbrushed, and dark patches shaded the skin under his eyes. “Father, if something is wrong, if there is some trouble, you can talk to me about it.”
Ashlin stopped to stare at his son. “Why do you say that? Has someone been talking where they shouldn’t? The Gari-Za, perhaps?”
“No, Father. No one has said anything.” He’d seriously considered telling his father what had happened in the old city even though they all swore they wouldn’t. But seeing the state Ashlin was in this morning made him think it would be unwise to do so.
“Then why do you speak of trouble?”
“You seem troubled, that’s all.” Roth wished he hadn’t spoken at all. He really should know better than to do so when his father was in such a state.
Ashlin’s eyes narrowed. “A man should be troubled when he finds the fate of his people is at risk. The queen claims our trouble is with Dyscordia. She claims she has tried to prevent war. But I see the truth.
“She wants a war with the mage king. In such a war, normal people like you and I have little chance of survival. She will weaken the humans by throwing us against the mages in order to lessen our numbers.
“Then, when she has defeated Dyscordia, she will come for us and finish us off. And the Gari-Za will help. Yes.” He resumed his pacing. “They will be glad to be rid of the troublesome humans.”
Roth felt a prickle of unease as he wondered if his father had been sharing these views with the other leaders. But he dare not ask. If only his mother were still alive. She had always managed to find some way to calm Ashlin’s worse moods. Until she threw herself out of their bedroom window. Sometimes, Roth feared he would find himself driven to do the same.
“I really should go and join the other heirs,” he said, standing.
Ashlin nodded. “Yes, you’ll be safer there. The queen won’t try to do anything to you so long as you’re with the other children. But stay close to your mother. She’ll protect you.”
A shiver rolled through Roth. He left the room without another word, desperate to escape the pull of his father’s madness.
